Polypropylene (PP)
Published · Researched 2026-09-20
Overview — what it is, best uses, key context
Polypropylene is the plastic of living hinges, bottle caps, and automotive trim — and one of the hardest common thermoplastics to 3D print. Its superpowers: outstanding fatigue resistance (living hinges that survive thousands of flexes), excellent chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, and low density. Its curse: extreme warping and near-zero bed adhesion (PP barely sticks to anything, including itself between layers if conditions are off). Best uses: living-hinge parts, chemical-resistant containers, snap-fit enclosures, lightweight drone/RC parts, and any part that must flex repeatedly without cracking. Two market tiers: unfilled PP (maximum hinge fatigue life) and glass-filled PP (BASF Ultrafuse PP GF30 — stiffer, less warp, hinge life traded for rigidity).

What's needed (hardware)
- Bed adhesion is the entire battle: PP tape (packing tape) on the bed, or PP-specific adhesives; glue stick does NOT work well. Some users print on PP sheet stock.
- Enclosure strongly recommended — PP warps aggressively on open frames.
- Hardened nozzle for GF grades (glass fiber is abrasive); ≥0.6 mm nozzle recommended for GF30.
- Dry the filament (60 °C/5 h+) even though PP is low-uptake — surface moisture still causes defects.
Brand/support reality
- BASF Forward AM: the only PP with serious documentation (GF30 TDS-class listing data); EU availability spotty (both Anodas SKUs out of stock at obs.); US via MatterHackers.
- Infinite Material Solutions (Caverna PP): US-made unfilled PP at a premium ($220/kg) — the living-hinge specialist pick.
- PP remains a niche filament: fewer than a dozen active SKUs tracked across retailers in this survey; expect stock gaps.
Community verdict
Thin in this pass (FB zero-yield; no PP-specific thread pulled — coverage gap, recorded). Practitioner consensus from retailer/guide copy: PP is a "one-trick wonder done brilliantly" — if you need a living hinge or chemical resistance, nothing else in FDM does it; for everything else, the warping/adhesion fight isn't worth it. GF grades trade hinge life for printability and stiffness.

Deepening pass (2026-09-20)
Social layer: Facebook groups zero-yield again (8 keyword queries across "3D Printing" 17k and "3D Printing World" 10k — polypropylene, POM, sintering, PVA, BVOH, PEEK, ABS-like resin, silk PLA — all returned no relevant posts). Threads keyword search returned zero results for every query (Threads search is effectively unusable for this research; the prior pass reported it erroring too). Instagram has no public topic search via the CLI (account-scoped only), so no IG signal — a real gap for a visual material, noted honestly. The usable signal came from practitioner forums instead.
New forum evidence (Prusa forum "Printing with Polypropylene (PP)", March 2026): the most practical PP tuning thread found to date. User-verified points: cooling fan OFF completely (any fan = warp plus layer-adhesion failure); other-layers nozzle ~235–240 °C; chamber at 45–50 °C to control warp; measure shrinkage per brand — one practitioner measured 0.77% XY on Yousu PP (more than ASA or PC), so per-brand XY compensation is needed; halve external-perimeter speeds (down from ~170 to ~85 mm/s) to tame stringing; retraction ≤1.5 mm; 3–4 perimeters minimum because PP interlayer adhesion is poor across brands. Bed surface: PP sheet stock or PP packing tape.
New vendor/guide evidence: MatterHackers' PP guide reports their LayerLock PP build surface gave "the most consistent results" after months of in-house testing, and warns that extruding too low can fuse the part to the bed — start ~1 mm above and baby-step down (new failure mode: over-aggressive first layer = permanently fused part). dddrop (Netherlands) recommends Magigoo PP adhesive, a brim on every print, never opening the enclosure mid-print (delamination), and drying at 70–80 °C for 6–8 h when stringing appears. Recreus (Spain) ships PP·3D with a PP primer/adhesive and documents: brim always, 0.15 mm first layer at +10 °C, +10% initial line width. New brands recorded: Recreus PP·3D (Spain, primer-included), dddrop PP (NL), Yousu PP (shrinkage datum). LayerLock PP plate and Magigoo PP are the two adhesion products with the most practitioner backing.
Extra failure modes + fixes: (1) PP strings and weakens when damp — 70–80 °C / 6–8 h drying fixes it. (2) Any part-cooling fan on default levels = guaranteed warp; run zero cooling. (3) Large flat parts warp regardless of brim size — per-brand shrinkage compensation (0.77% datum for Yousu) is the fix, not more brim. (4) Cold chamber = delamination mid-print; 45–50 °C chamber recommended. (5) Too-low first layer on a PP-specific surface can weld the part on permanently.
Brand vs brand: no head-to-head brand shootout found. Practitioner guidance converges brand-agnostically: fan off, hot chamber, PP tape / LayerLock / Magigoo PP, 3–4 perimeters. The BASF-vs-Caverna documentation-tier vs living-hinge-specialist-tier read from the first pass is unchanged; nothing new contradicts it.
Price re-verification (2026-09-20): no fresh cart prices moved in this pass; first-pass figures (Forward AM unfilled ~$95/kg, BASF GF30 €115.50–155.29/kg, Caverna $220/kg) stand as dated 2026-09-20. No new price changes detected.
Deepening pass 3 (2026-09-21)
New evidence (public search, observed 2026-09-21):
- Prusa forum thread "Printing with Polypropylene (PP)" active March 2026: tall-tower stringing solved by slowing max volumetric flow and ~20% fan on layers under ~60 s; minimum speed 10 mm/s suggested. Corroborates the 2026 Prusa thread already in the pass-2 evidence base. One owner: Recreus PP ships with a flask of dedicated PP glue, letting it print on ordinary PEI smooth plate — corroborates the "proprietary magic" theme from the German forum anecdote.
- Hackaday (Aug 2025, "Lost in Tech" video review, crawled 4 days earlier): MSDS suggests printing PP is not much more toxic than PLA, but fumes should not be inhaled; glass/PEI are poor surfaces, plain PP tape is the best budget option; low stringing because PP is not hygroscopic (good for humid climates); the "killer app" is compliant mechanisms — bend-resilient like a flexible filament but hard plastic.
- RepRap rookie build log (reprap.org): PP sticks to PP sheets and to HDPE cutting boards; PP filaments are soft, so extruder calibration (e.g. M92 E) matters for dimensioning.
- Industry color: Braskem's own nickname for warp-prone PP — "poly-warp-ylene" (additivemanufacturing.media); Formlabs launched PP powder for the Fuse 1+ 30W at CES 2024 (SLS context, not FDM).
Pricing dated 2026-09-21: no per-brand price changes found; previous prices stand.
Persistent gaps: current German-market availability of the €49.90 ColorFabb xHT not confirmed; no 2026 FDM test data on GF/CF-PP variants; no Facebook-group owner data.
