It targets offices, classrooms, and design studios: enclosed, heated-chamber FDM with soluble supports, auto-calibration, and GrabCAD Print workflow — positioned by Stratasys as bringing industrial-grade reliability to users who don't want to tinker.
Voltera V-One
The Voltera V-One is a desktop 4-in-1 PCB prototyping machine made by Voltera Inc. (Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada; founded 2013). It uses direct ink writing (DIW) — a gantry moves magnetic toolheads that dispense silver conductive ink to print traces, dispense solder paste, and (with the optional drill attachment) drill holes and vias, then reflows components on a built-in heated bed.
Filaments & materials
Everyday spools to engineering polymers — what each one is really for.
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
ABS is the classic engineering thermoplastic of desktop FDM: strong, ductile, heat-resistant (usable around 90–100 °C), and post-processable with acetone vapor smoothing — the reason it defined the RepRap era and remains the primary recommended material for Voron printer builds. It is also the filament most associated with two persistent debates: warping (it needs an enclosure and hot bed to print well) and fumes (it emits styrene VOCs when melted, so ventilation is not optional).
ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate)
ASA is ABS's outdoor twin: acrylonitrile + styrene like ABS, but the UV-vulnerable polybutadiene rubber phase is replaced with an acrylic (acrylate) elastomer that is inherently UV-stable. It was developed for the automotive industry (exterior trim that must survive 5–10 years of sun), and that is exactly where it wins in 3D printing — outdoor brackets, sensor housings, garden and automotive parts that would yellow, chalk ("farinage"), and embrittle in ABS.
Biocompatible & dental resins (405 nm SLA/MSLA)
The regulated end of resin printing. Biocompatible resins are photopolymers validated (with a specific wash/cure workflow) for contact with skin, mucosal membrane, or the body — surgical planning models, implant sizing tools, ventilator components, drug-delivery parts. Dental resins are the application-specific branch: surgical guides, temporary crowns/bridges, denture bases/teeth, clear aligner/IBT trays, models — printed overwhelmingly on Formlabs Form 3B/4B-series printers in dental labs.
Carbon-fiber filled composites (PA-CF / PET-CF)
Observation date: 2026-09-20. All prices and claims dated to this observation date; staleness flagged per item.
Castable / wax resins (405 nm LCD/DLP)
Castable resins are photopolymers engineered to burn out cleanly in a kiln, leaving a cavity for molten metal — the digital replacement for hand-carved jeweler's wax in lost-wax casting. Best uses: jewelry (rings, pendants, settings), dental crowns/bridges, and small metal parts in gold, silver, brass, bronze. Two sub-families: wax-based (higher wax content, smoother burnout, better for thicker pieces — e.g. Siraya Cast True Blue) and polymer-based (sharper detail, fussier burnout — e.g.
Conductive PLA (Electronics)
Conductive PLA is standard PLA compounded with a conductive filler (usually carbon black, sometimes graphene or carbon nanotubes) so that printed parts carry current. The pioneer is Proto-pasta Conductive PLA (ProtoPlant, Vancouver WA, USA — launched via Kickstarter in early 2015), still the reference product in 2026. It is a carbon-black composite rated by the maker at:
Flexible / elastomeric resins (405 nm LCD/DLP)
Flexible resins are photopolymers that cure into rubber-like parts: gaskets, seals, vibration dampers, grips, wearable prototypes, and soft robotics components. They span hard-flexible (Shore 65D, bendable but firm — Siraya Tenacious) down to true elastomers (Shore 70A and softer — Tenacious Flex Black, Formlabs Flexible 50A) that stretch and rebound. Best uses: parts that must bend 180°, compress repeatedly, or absorb impact without shattering — the resin counterpart to TPU filament.
Metal & ceramic sintering filaments (FDM feedstocks)
Metal/ceramic FDM filaments let an ordinary filament printer make real metal or ceramic parts: the filament is a highly loaded polymer–powder composite (typically ~80% metal powder in a polymer binder). You print a "green part" oversized, then debinding + sintering (catalytic debind, then furnace sintering near the metal's melting point) burns out the binder and fuses the powder into dense metal — with significant shrinkage.
Nylon PA6/PA12 (incl. PAHT-CF style high-temp nylon)
Nylon (polyamide) is the engineering workhorse of FDM: tough, abrasion-resistant, chemically resistant, and self-lubricating — ideal for gears, bearings, pulleys, jigs, fixtures, and functional parts that see load and wear. The catch is legendary: nylon is extremely hygroscopic (PA6 absorbs far more than PA12), so a filament dryer / dry box is mandatory and you generally print straight from it; wet nylon pops, strings, and foams. It also wants an enclosure (warping) and 250–300 °C nozzles.
PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) — Material Profile
PETG is the "best of both worlds" filament — the standard middle ground of FDM printing, sitting squarely between PLA and ABS/ASA:
PLA (Polylactic Acid) & PLA+ / Tough PLA — Material Profile
PLA is the default beginner material in FDM 3D printing: biodegradable (under industrial composting conditions), low-warp, low-odor, and printable on almost any machine without an enclosure. It prints crisp detail and comes in the widest color/finish range of any filament — hence its dominance in decorative printing, prototyping, and models.
POM / acetal (Delrin)
POM (polyoxymethylene), sold as acetal or DuPont's Delrin brand, is the engineering plastic of precision moving parts: exceptionally low friction, high wear resistance, high stiffness, and excellent dimensional stability — the material of machined gears, bearings, bushings, and sliding components.
Polycarbonate (PC) — 3D Printing Filament
Observation date: 2026-09-20. All prices and claims dated to this observation date; staleness flagged per item.
Polypropylene (PP)
Polypropylene is the plastic of living hinges, bottle caps, and automotive trim — and one of the hardest common thermoplastics to 3D print. Its superpowers: outstanding fatigue resistance (living hinges that survive thousands of flexes), excellent chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, and low density. Its curse: extreme warping and near-zero bed adhesion (PP barely sticks to anything, including itself between layers if conditions are off).
Recycled filaments (rPLA, rPETG, upcycled feedstocks)
Recycled filaments are made from post-industrial or post-consumer plastic waste instead of virgin pellets: rPLA (recycled PLA), rPETG, and upcycled specialty feedstocks (fishing nets, carpet waste, textile offcuts). Best uses: everyday prints where sustainability matters more than peak mechanical performance — prototypes, organizers, decorative parts, draft prints.
Resin materials overview
The default starter resin: Elegoo Standard / Standard 2.0 / 8K, Anycubic Standard, Phrozen Aqua 8K. High detail, cheap, but brittle — thin parts snap under finger pressure. Good for display miniatures, terrible for anything you drop, drill, or snap-fit. This is the resin that teaches people why ABS-like exists.
Specialty / Aesthetic Filaments
The decorative half of the filament world: wood-filled, silk/shiny, marble/stone, glow-in-the-dark, and temperature color-change PLAs. These are PLA-based composites (except where noted) tuned for looks rather than strength. The standing tradeoffs, confirmed across manufacturers and community sources: silk is brittle but gorgeous; wood smells and stains like wood but clogs more; glow is genuinely abrasive; marble hides layer lines.
TPU (flexible filament)
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is the standard flexible FDM filament, measured in Shore hardness: 85A (very soft, rubber-band-like) up to 95A/98A (semi-flex, like a shoe sole). It is the go-to for phone cases, watch bands, gaskets/seals, vibration dampers, cosplay props, drone parts, and wearable prototypes.
Tough / ABS-like resins (405 nm LCD/DLP)
"ABS-like" is the workhorse category of desktop resin printing: photopolymer resins formulated to print with higher toughness and impact resistance than brittle standard resin, named for approximating (not matching) injection-molded ABS behavior. Best uses: functional prototypes, snap-fit parts, brackets, housings, and any resin part that must survive drops or assembly. Critical caveat: "ABS-like" is marketing, not a spec.
Ultra-high-temperature polymers (PEEK, PEI/ULTEM, PEKK)
The ceiling of FDM. PEEK (polyetheretherketone), PEI (polyetherimide, sold as ULTEM), and PEKK (polyetherketoneketone) are the three thermoplastics that survive continuous service above ~170 °C, and they do it with aerospace-grade chemical resistance, inherent flame retardancy, and mechanical strength no commodity filament touches.
Water-soluble supports (PVA, BVOH)
Water-soluble support filaments exist for one job: complex dual-extrusion prints (overhangs, internal channels, nested geometries) where mechanical support removal would damage the part. After printing, the supports dissolve in water — no pliers, no scarring.
Workshop tools & accessories
Dryers, enclosures, safety gear, and the workshop around the printer.
Air quality monitors for the printer room (IKEA VINDSTYRKA, Temtop)
FDM printing emits ultrafine particles (UFPs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) — ABS/ASA are the worst, PLA the least; laser engraving and resin printing add their own emissions. Since the enclosure/filtration track already covers cleaning the air, this item covers measuring it: a ~$40–60 room monitor that tells you whether your enclosure, ventilation, or air purifier is actually doing anything.
Anycubic Wash & Cure Plus
The Anycubic Wash & Cure Plus is Anycubic's large-format resin wash-and-cure station, launched April 16, 2021 (Anycubic launch release via PR Newswire Asia: $169 presale for the first 1,000 machines, rising to $249 afterward). It washes and then UV-cures resin prints in a single unit: the same base drives either the washing bucket or the curing turntable — it cannot wash and cure simultaneously.
Bambu Lab AMS 2 Pro (Automatic Material System, 2nd generation)
The Bambu Lab AMS 2 Pro is Bambu Lab's second-generation 4-spool automatic material system, launched alongside the H2D printer in March 2025 (it ships as the "Combo" unit with H2D and newer Bambu printers). It replaces the original AMS (2022) as the multi-color/multimaterial flagship while the original AMS stays on sale.
Build Plates: Textured PEI Flagship + 2026 High-Temp State
The flagship is the Bambu Lab Dual-Texture PEI Plate (FAP011 for X1/P1/A1 256 mm; FAP012 for A1 Mini): two-sided — textured PEI powder-coat on one side, smooth matte PEI sheet on the other — on flexible spring steel, and the default upgrade/replacement plate for the Bambu ecosystem since the X1 launched (2022).
Build-plate adhesives (Magigoo, Bambu liquid glue, glue stick)
The cheapest insurance policy in 3D printing: a thin film between the part and the plate that holds the first layer during the print and lets go when the plate cools. The 2026 consensus stack:
Desiccant & dry-storage consumables (silica gel, Eva-Dry E-333, hygrometers, vacuum bags)
Dry filament in, dry filament out: the consumable layer that keeps spools dry between dryer sessions. Four product lanes dominate 2026 practice:
Dry-box / vacuum storage — Polymaker PolyBox Edition II
This slot covers the dry-box / vacuum storage category, represented here by the Polymaker PolyBox Edition II — the best-known ready-made passive dry box in the category. No single product dominates this category the way a flagship printer does, so this file covers the PolyBox as the canonical example plus the main alternatives (RepBox, vacuum-bag systems, rigid vacuum containers).
Electronics Assembly Tools (for Printed Electronics)
Scope boundary: This file deliberately does NOT duplicate the existing research on the Voltera V-One (desktop PCB/direct-ink-writing system, base from $3,499.99, documented in industrial/files/voltera-v-one.md) or conductive PLA (Proto-pasta, Recreus, Electrifi, documented in filaments/files/conductive-pla.md). Those cover making conductive structures.
Enclosure + Air Filtration for Open Printers
Flagship choice for this item: Wham Bam HotBox V2 (enclosure) + Nevermore StealthMax V2 (filtration). Documented rationale: the HotBox is the most-recognized branded foldable enclosure for open-frame printers (Ender 3, Prusa MK3 class) with continuous retail presence since ~2019 and a current V2 revision; Nevermore is the community-standard VOC/particulate filtration design, and the StealthMax V2 is the current 2026 revision sold as a full kit.
Filament splicers and multi-material systems (Mosaic Palette 3 Pro, SUNLU FC01)
Two very different products answer two different questions:
Fire & Smoke Safety for Unattended 3D Printing
This category is mitigation and alerting, not prevention: no alarm, blanket, or extinguisher stops the initiating electrical or thermal fault. Prevention still starts with a reputable printer with working thermal-runaway/verify-heater protection, undamaged wiring and connectors, correct grounding, routine maintenance, noncombustible placement, surge protection where appropriate, and removing fuel (spare filament, cardboard, IPA rags) from the printer's vicinity.
Klipper / OctoPrint printer control stack (Mainsail, Fluidd, Moonraker)
The control stack is the free, open-source software layer that turns a dumb USB port into a remote printer: upload files from your PC, start prints from your phone, watch a webcam feed, and — in Klipper's case — replace the printer's entire firmware with one that computes motion on a full Linux computer instead of a tiny microcontroller. Three pieces:
Laser engraver add-ons for 3D printers
Laser engraving/cutting modules turn a 3D printer into a hybrid fabrication station. In 2026 there are three real lanes:
Measurement & Calibration Tools (Mitutoyo 500-196-30 flagship)
The measurement file for the 3D printing workflow: a flagship digital caliper, a budget alternative, and a feeler-gauge set. Calipers are the single most-used measuring tool in 3D printing — checking filament diameter, verifying printed dimensions against CAD, calibrating extrusion/flow, and sizing fits before assembly. Flagship pick: the Mitutoyo 500-196-30 Absolute Digimatic (0–6 in / 0–150 mm), the community "buy once, cry once" reference.
Nozzle + Hotend Upgrades: High-Flow & Hardened Steel
This item covers the two nozzle upgrade paths that matter in 2026: high-flow nozzles (flagship: Bondtech CHT® BiMetal coated nozzle, the original and still the reference design) and hardened-steel nozzles for abrasive filaments (mainstream: Bambu Lab hotend-with-nozzle; premium alternatives: E3D ObXiDian 500 (launched Nov 2025), Diamondback PCD nozzles; legacy: E3D Nozzle X).
Post-Processing & Finishing Kit
Post-processing is where printed parts stop looking printed. The community consensus (Reddit r/3Dprinting, YouTube finishing channels, model-railroad and miniature communities) converges on the same five-tool core:
Prusa MMU3 (Multi-Material Upgrade, 3rd generation)
The Prusa MMU3 is Prusa Research's single-nozzle, up-to-5-filament multi-material upgrade, the successor to the infamously finicky MMU2S. Prusa positions it as "the fastest single-nozzle multi-material solution on the market," fully open (zero vendor lock-in — any filament brand, any spool up to 2 kg, no RFID), and driven by a completely rewritten firmware with full two-way printer communication and LCD error integration.
Resin Printing Safety Kit (3M 7502-based PPE + spill/containment)
This is the safety kit that sits around a resin (MSLA/DLP) printer: half-face respirator with organic-vapor cartridges, 5+ mil nitrile gloves, splash-rated eye protection, spill containment, and waste curing/disposal. It is not a printer — it is the PPE layer the resin workflow demands, and resin workflow safety is already covered in depth in the companion resin research: resin-types-and-safety.md (uncured resin is an irritant and sensitizer; sealed enclosure or fume hood ducted outside is the p…
Revopoint 3D Scanner — Context (2026)
Revopoint is the dominant consumer/prosumer structured-light scanner brand, and 2026 is a changing-of-the-guard year for its lineup: the POP 4 is now the current versatile flagship (Kickstarter campaign, shipping to backers from July 2026), which repositions the POP 3 Plus as the still-listed value option and the MINI 2 as the small-object/detail specialist.
SUNLU FilaDryer S4
The SUNLU FilaDryer S4 is SUNLU's high-capacity four-spool filament dryer, launched via Kickstarter in September 2023 (SUNLU's official product-history page calls it a 2023 launch). A PRNewswire release dated March 13, 2024 reported 5,956 supporters, 6,560 orders, and $612,954 raised on Kickstarter.
Slicer & Support Software Landscape (2026)
As of September 2026, the slicer world has settled into a clear shape:
Spare-parts & maintenance kits
Research date: 2026-09-20. Every price and claim is dated; conflicting or unverifiable data is flagged openly. Per standing instruction, social sources (Facebook groups, forums, YouTube) were searched before manufacturer and retailer pages. This item excludes hotend/nozzle upgrade modifications (covered in the hotend/nozzle upgrade exclusion); it covers the consumable wear parts and the maintenance kits that keep a stock printer running.
UPS backup power for 3D printers
A 3D print that dies at hour 11 of a 12-hour job because the power blinked is a special kind of heartbreak. A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) rides through brownouts and short outages, conditions line voltage, and gives you enough runtime to either survive a short blip or pause/park the print gracefully. For 3D printers specifically, this is not about finishing the print on battery — it's about not losing it.
Ultrasonic cleaner for resin workflows
An ultrasonic cleaner uses 40 kHz cavitation — millions of microscopic bubbles imploding per second — to scrub uncured resin out of fine details, threads, and internal channels that a toothbrush and a slosh in IPA can't reach. Resin hobbyists consistently report it produces their cleanest-ever prints ("my last print was the first w/ the USC and it was probably the best print I've done" — Reaper forums). Typical recipe: ~2 minutes after a quick IPA pre-rinse, then a final rinse and post-cure.
