Overview

The Prusa XL is a large-format CoreXY FDM 3D printer with an active toolchanger (1–5 independent toolheads) made by Prusa Research (Josef Prusa; designed/manufactured in Prague, Czech Republic and Delaware, USA — PCB production in Prague).

Current status (2026): this is a Gen-2 product line. In August 2026 Prusa replaced the original XL (launched 2023) with the Prusa XL+, "second generation of our proven large-format 3D printer." The XL+ is the machine currently sold on prusa3d.com; old "Original Prusa XL semi-assembled/kit" URLs now redirect to the XL+ product pages. Resellers still hold original-XL stock (e.g. 123-3d.co.uk lists original XL assembled single-tool at £2,084, in stock — observed 2026-09-20).

What's new in XL+ (per prusa3d.com, "Entire Lineup Upgraded" Aug 2026):

  • Toolhead alignment: mechanical pin → dedicated electronic Tool Offset Sensor (Prusa claims ~20× faster)
  • New GT1.5 belts (less moiré/backlash), 360° toolhead cooling, additional electronics cooling
  • Nozzle wiper — cleans each nozzle before every print
  • ~10–15% faster than the original XL
  • Optional Enclosure XL+ rated to 50 °C chamber; upcoming external heater add-on → 60 °C (heater is "coming soon," enclosure is XL+-only, not compatible with original XL)
  • Existing XL owners are offered an upgrade path ("Already own an XL? Upgrade now!")
  • Silicone-printing toolhead (co-developed with Filament2, XL-platform exclusive) announced for Q4 2026 — will print real silicone/epoxy on the XL+

Toolhead options currently sold (XL+): Single-tool ($2,999), Dual-Head ($3,599), Five-Head ($4,499). All ship assembled — attach the toolheads and run the automated calibration wizard. No kit option is listed for the XL+ (the original XL was sold as semi-assembled and a kit; the kit era appears over).

Firmware-generation note (verify before judging current stability): firmware 6.4.0 (Nov 2025) was withdrawn in Feb 2026 after Phase Stepping, homing, and bootloader-BSOD issues; Prusa advised downgrading to 6.2.6. 6.4.1 (Apr 2026) and later fixes followed; the current stable is 6.10.2 (Sept 2026). Multiple owner threads (forum.prusa3d.com, Feb–Apr 2026) debated pinning 6.2.6 vs 6.4.1 — worth revisiting owner sentiment on 6.10.x before purchase.

What's included / what's needed

In the box (per prusa3d.com "What's in the Box"):

  • Prusa XL+ 3D printer (assembled; you attach the toolhead(s))
  • 3D Printing Handbook, 1 kg Prusament PLA, double-sided satin print sheet
  • 1–5 toolheads with high-flow nozzles, USB drive with sample prints, toolset, alcohol-saturated wipes, warranty info

What's needed (not in box): nothing mandatory — ships assembled and runs fully offline; enclosure and external heater are optional add-ons (needed only for 50–60 °C chamber printing of ASA/ABS/PA11CF at large scale); drybox recommended for engineering materials (Prusa USS Drybox offered as accessory).

Support reality

  • 24/7 human support (no AI bots), in seven languages — per prusa3d.com; Prusa's support reputation remains one of the strongest in the prosumer segment.
  • 60-day hassle-free returns on printers.
  • 2-year EU warranty (stated on prusa3d.com). US warranty duration: UNVERIFIED — not found on the product page; Prusa US historically offers shorter terms than EU, but I could not confirm a number as of 2026-09-20.
  • Spare parts guaranteed 5+ years, user-serviceable with a screwdriver, published repair guides; no glued components, no vendor locks, open-source firmware.
  • Caveat from the community: owners in 2026 describe support as "very helpful" but sometimes "laborious" (Prusa forum, Jan 2026); the firmware 6.4.0 saga (Nov 2025 → withdrawal Feb 2026) was a real support/reputation wobble; current stable 6.10.2 (Sept 2026) needs more owner miles before it can be called clean.

Community verdict

Owners treat the XL as a professional-grade multi-material workhorse: the toolchanger's zero-purge-waste printing and reliability are the reasons to buy it ("It's the most reliable toolchanger system I've used" — 3D Printer Stuff, cited on prusa3d.com; sierrasoftworks review: "beautifully engineered... gets out of the way and lets me focus on what I want to design"). The same community is blunt about its cost (5-toolhead + enclosure ≈ 6× a Bambu P1S/AMS combo), the painful firmware 6.4.0 episode, gen-1 toolhead-alignment fiddliness, and occasional hardware niggles (belt wear, fan-test false failures, noise). The XL+ (Aug 2026) directly answers the loudest complaints — auto tool-offset sensor, nozzle wiper, GT1.5 belts, enclosure-rated 60 °C — but independent XL+ reviews were not yet published as of 2026-09-20 ("independent review units go out at launch").

Facebook groups checked: "Prusa XL User Group – Help, Tips and Sharing" (868 members, id 304304859092874) and "Prusa XL Mods Fixes and Showcase" (2,000 members, id 427507812336941). Recent activity (Aug–Sept 2026) centers on: retrofitting Prusa's new nozzle wiper onto original XLs, DIY 5-dock nozzle wipers with debris collectors, the SideKick XL filament loader mod, and a German owner's belt-abrasion question on a 2024 5-toolhead machine — i.e., an active, mod-heavy owner base, not a complaints fire.

Deepening pass (2026-09-20)

Social-source attempts this pass

  • Facebook CLI group-post searches ("Prusa XL" in 3D Printing / 3D Printing World): 0 results; CLI limitation, not evidence of absence. The original session covered two XL owner groups directly.
  • Prusa forum + GitHub (open web): productive — firmware-saga follow-ups below.

Price re-verification (2026-09-20)

  • XL+ Single $2,999 / Dual $3,599 / Five-head $4,499 — no change found this pass; reseller closeout of gen-1 originals (e.g. £2,084 single-tool at 123-3d.co.uk) still listed. Enclosure price still "Loading price" on prusa3d.com per original session.

New evidence: firmware 6.4.1 (Apr 2026) fixes — and the known BSOD

New evidence: 6.4.2 calibration crashes (GitHub, Aug 2026)

New evidence: toolchanger error documentation

New evidence: historical tool-alignment criticism (context)

  • Hacker News discussion (2024-era, crawled Jul 2026): critics noted gen-1 tool heads not lining up accurately on every swap, with community workarounds like "slamming the toolhead into a printed block after every swap"; the XL+ (auto tool-offset sensor, nozzle wiper) is Prusa's direct answer — but independent XL+ reviews were still absent as of 2026-09-20, so treat the fix as manufacturer-claimed until owners confirm. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38771452

Open questions carried forward

  • Independent XL+ owner reviews (none published as of 2026-09-20).
  • Owner sentiment on firmware 6.10.x stability (released Sep 2026).
  • Enclosure final pricing; heater add-on ("coming soon").

Deepening pass 3 (2026-09-21)

facebook-cli status: groups posts --group-id ... --query "..." re-tested 2026-09-21 — still returns [] (endpoint remains broken). No new FB pass run; forums + GitHub remain the live evidence channels.

August 2026 Gen-2 refresh — documented (prusa3d.com; cloudfront news roundup)

The XL+ received its first major upgrade since the 2023 launch:

  • INDX Tool Offset Sensor (eddy-current): replaces pin-tapping for toolhead alignment; permanently mounted, ~20× faster. This documents the "20× claim" that was UNVERIFIED in pass 2 — still a manufacturer figure, now with mechanism specified.
  • 360° cooling system (from MK4S), GT1.5 belts for smoother surfaces, high-flow nozzles standard on new machines.
  • Optional XL enclosure upgrade: adds chamber heating and better seals — addresses the "no heated chamber" complaint directly. Official page states the XL+ "can now reach up to 60 °C in the enclosed chamber (optional addons)."
  • Silicone toolhead shown last October, released fall 2026. HT Hotend $199.99 pre-order for the CORE One line (cross-reference: prusa-core-one file).

Firmware 6.4.x — mixed evidence (Prusa forum, Mar 2026)

  • Owner A (2 XLs): one stable on 6.4.0, one with toolhead-crash/homing issues → 6.2.6 fixed everything; 6.4.1 beta on the problem machine "rock solid... quieter than 6.4.0," 100+ hours, ~1,500 tool changes, zero issues, possibly better quality via phase stepping. Moved to small production runs with 6.2.6 on hot standby.
  • Owner B: neither 6.4.0 nor 6.4.1 completed probing (tried Dimonback/Obxidian nozzles, PA and satin beds) → back to 6.2.6.
  • Owner C (5-tool XL): beta working well; previously always failed "printhead cleaning failed" without manual pre-cleaning — no longer.
  • GitHub commit (2026-08-18): fixed a tool-offset-calibration abort that redscreened the printer. The firmware story remains "improving, not settled" — consistent with the ledger's withheld "Gen-2 is fixed" verdict. (forum.prusa3d.com; prusa3d/prusa-firmware-buddy)

Reviewer quotes (Aug 2026 Prusa product page)

  • Make: magazine: "If you are seeking the absolute best print quality on a machine that stands alone in its capabilities for multi-material or multi-extruder size, the XL delivers."
  • 3D Printer Stuff: "Prusa XL is the best multi‑tool printer you can buy in 2026. It's the most reliable toolchanger system I've used, and reliability is what matters when you're 14 hours into a 5-color print."

Gap status

  • Independent XL+ long-term reviews remain thin (still the ledger's UNVERIFIED). Firmware 6.10.2 verdict still open.
